AUTO REGISTRATION

New Hampshire law requires you to obtain a New Hampshire Driver's

license and registration (plates) within 60 days of moving into the State.

You will need to bring your out-of-state title to the Town Clerk's Office where your

New Hampshire title application and registration forms will be prepared. At the

Town Clerk's Office, you will pay a motor vehicle permit fee based on the original

price of the vehicle and then you obtain plates. A state registration fee based on

the weight of the vehicle will be paid at the time you obtain your plates.

There are two exceptions to the above procedure:

1. If a lien holder is holding your title, bring your current registration to the Town Clerk's Office along with the current mileage of the vehicle bureau.

2. Cars 1991 and older are not titled in New Hampshire, so your current registration will suffice to get a New Hampshire registration. In this

case, you will also start at the Town Clerk's Office.

You will need:

q Proof of Residence: utility bill postmarked with name and Merrimack address

q Current registration

q Title on 1992 or newer vehicle

q Name & address of dealer & lien holder if title is not available

q Mileage on vehicle

q Cash, 2 local checks or 2 bank checks.

DRIVER'S LICENSE

The cost for a New Hampshire driver's license is $50.00 for five (5) years.

You may walk into a New Hampshire Licensing Sub-Station (in Merrimack, a

substation is located at Harris Pond Shopping Center, 32 Daniel Webster Highway)

and pay the licensing fee, have your eyes tested, photo taken, and receive a

temporary six (6) month license. Your permanent license will be mailed.

You must bring with you:

q An original or certified copy of his/her birth certificate. Please Note: If your name is different than what is listed on your birth certificate, you must also provide the legal document of that name change (i.e., marriage certificate).

q Current driver license or driver license which has expired no more than 12 months prior to the date of application.

q Proof of residency - One of the following:

NH Valid Registration
Town/City Clerk Approval of Residency Letter

PROPERTY TAX

The property tax year runs from April 1st of one year to March 31st of the next year.  Property owners should be aware that it is their responsibility to contact the Tax Collector's Office for a duplicate property tax bill in the event that they do not receive the original billing on the property. Not receiving a tax bill will not obviate the owner's responsibilities for payment of the tax and/or interest and penalties incurred.

The Town of Merrimack has adopted the twice-a-year billing procedure. The first bill, which is figured at half the previous years total tax, is mailed at the end of May and is due on July 1st. All property taxes not paid by the due date are subject to an interest charge of 12% per annum.

There are a number of Property Tax Exemptions for qualifying veterans and their widows, as well as for the elderly and blind. For specific details on these, please contact the Assessor's Office at (603) 424-5136.
